Joseph Ibn Kaspi (Provence and Spain, 1280-1345) was one of the most radical Jewish thinkers of the Middle Ages. In this course we will carefully read two of his works: Sefer ha-Musar (an ethical will, written for his son, which contains autobiographical information and a summary of his philosophy) and Gevia' Kesef (a philosophical reflection on problems in scripture), as well as selections from other writings. While the language of instruction and discussion will be English, all students with a conversational level of English are encouraged to take the course. Students may read the homework in Hebrew if they choose, and can choose Hebrew articles from the bibliography. The written assignments can be submitted in either English or Hebrew.
